A storybook for all ages to experience mathematics, problems solving, and the rewards that come with perseverance.
This book is perhaps best experienced with someone as a read-aloud or read-together. Readers will learn of Ying's trouble and root for her to find her solution. They will find themselves drawn not only into the life problems that Ying is facing but also into the inherent mathematics of the story. It is through the beauty of the pattern of the dots on the turtle's shell that the solution is finally found and the land is saved.
ReadershipChildren ages 5 and up, parents, and teachers can enjoy the book for its rich beauty in mathematics and as an ancient legend.

From wonderful Chinese legend to engaging problem solving, “Ying and the Magic Turtle” is delightfully written and illustrated.

This is a great book for all of us. It is about perseverance, curiosity, and self-confidence. I love so many aspects of the book. The story draws you in from the beginning! I love the problem set-up. I found myself wanting to stop and draw the pictures. When it was done, I stared closely, intensely to see if I too could figure it out! This was before the reveal. My favorite line is, “because of your patience, curiosity and mindfulness ...” The endnotes are incredible. I love the way they challenge us to think further about this!

“Ying and the Magic Turtle”, a Chinese legend retold by Sue Looney, captures our imaginations and our hearts through the power of storytelling. And, in this beautiful story, which is embedded in both myth and math, Looney takes young readers on a journey that is curious and dreamy, the qualities only heightened by the simple and disarming watercolor images. This book is a must-have for any elementary teacher or parent to promote the allure and magic of mathematics!
Sunil Singh, author of “Math Recess” -
A beautiful story with beautiful visuals about a piece of beautiful mathematics. What a joy for the heart and the mind!
