Quadratic Number Theory is an introduction to algebraic number theory for readers with a moderate knowledge of elementary number theory and some familiarity with the terminology of abstract algebra. By restricting attention to questions about squares the author achieves the dual goals of making the presentation accessible to undergraduates and reflecting the historical roots of the subject. The representation of integers by quadratic forms is emphasized throughout the text.

Lehman introduces an innovative notation for ideals of a quadratic domain that greatly facilitates computation and he uses this to particular effect. The text has an unusual focus on actual computation. This focus, and this notation, serve the author's historical purpose as well; ideals can be seen as number-like objects, as Kummer and Dedekind conceived of them. The notation can be adapted to quadratic forms and provides insight into the connection between quadratic forms and ideals. The computation of class groups and continued fraction representations are featured—the author's notation makes these computations particularly illuminating.

Quadratic Number Theory, with its exceptionally clear prose, hundreds of exercises, and historical motivation, would make an excellent textbook for a second undergraduate course in number theory. The clarity of the exposition would also make it a terrific choice for independent reading. It will be exceptionally useful as a fruitful launching pad for undergraduate research projects in algebraic number theory.

Real Analysis: A Constructive Approach Through Interval Arithmetic presents a careful treatment of calculus and its theoretical underpinnings from the constructivist point of view. This leads to an important and unique feature of this book: All existence proofs are direct, so showing that the numbers or functions in question exist means exactly that they can be explicitly calculated. For example, at the very beginning, the real numbers are shown to exist because they are constructed from the rationals using interval arithmetic. This approach, with its clear analogy to scientific measurement with tolerances, is taken throughout the book and makes the subject especially relevant and appealing to students with an interest in computing, applied mathematics, the sciences, and engineering.

The first part of the book contains all the usual material in a standard one-semester course in analysis of functions of a single real variable: continuity (uniform, not pointwise), derivatives, integrals, and convergence. The second part contains enough more technical material—including an introduction to complex variables and Fourier series—to fill out a full-year course. Throughout the book the emphasis on rigorous and direct proofs is supported by an abundance of examples, exercises, and projects—many with hints—at the end of every section. The exposition is informal but exceptionally clear and well motivated throughout.

This book is an introduction to real analysis for a one-semester course aimed at students who have completed the calculus sequence and preferably one other course, such as linear algebra. It does not assume any specific knowledge and starts with all that is needed from sets, logic, and induction. Then there is a careful introduction to the real numbers with an emphasis on developing proof-writing skills. It continues with a logical development of the notions of sequences, open and closed sets (including compactness and the Cantor set), continuity, differentiation, integration, and series of numbers and functions.

A theme in the book is to give more than one proof for interesting facts; this illustrates how different ideas interact and it makes connections among the facts that are being learned. Metric spaces are introduced early in the book, but there are instructions on how to avoid metric spaces for the instructor who wishes to do so. There are questions that check the readers' understanding of the material, with solutions provided at the end. Topics that could be optional or assigned for independent reading include the Cantor function, nowhere differentiable functions, the Gamma function, and the Weierstrass theorem on approximation by continuous functions.

This book on two-dimensional geometry uses a problem-solving approach to actively engage students in the learning process. The aim is to guide readers through the story of the subject, while giving them room to discover and partially construct the story themselves. The book bridges the study of plane geometry and the study of curves and surfaces of non-constant curvature in three-dimensional Euclidean space. One useful feature is that the book can be adapted to suit different audiences.

The first half of the text covers plane geometry without and with Euclid's Fifth Postulate, followed by a brief synthetic treatment of spherical geometry through the excess angle formula. This part only requires a background in high school geometry and basic trigonometry and is suitable for a quarter course for future high school geometry teachers. A brief foray into the second half could complete a semester course.

The second half of the text gives a uniform treatment of all the complete, simply connected, two-dimensional geometries of constant curvature, one geometry for each real number (its curvature), including their groups of isometries, geodesics, measures of lengths and areas, as well as formulas for areas of regions bounded by polygons in terms of the curvature of the geometry and the sum of the interior angles of the polygon. This book is derived from lecture notes for a course on Fourier analysis for engineering and science students at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. Beyond teaching specific topics and techniques—all of which are important in many areas of engineering and science—the author's goal is to help engineering and science students cultivate more advanced mathematical know-how and increase confidence in learning and using mathematics, as well as appreciate the coherence of the subject. He promises the readers a little magic on every page.

The section headings are all recognizable to mathematicians, but the arrangement and emphasis are directed toward students from other disciplines. The material also serves as a foundation for advanced courses in signal processing and imaging. Geometry and the theory of numbers are as old as some of the oldest historical records of humanity. Ever since antiquity, mathematicians have discovered many beautiful interactions between the two subjects and recorded them in such classical texts as Euclid's Elements and Diophantus's Arithmetica. Nowadays, the field of mathematics that studies the interactions between number theory and algebraic geometry is known as arithmetic geometry. This book is an introduction to number theory and arithmetic geometry, and the goal of the text is to use geometry as the motivation to prove the main theorems in the book. For example, the fundamental theorem of arithmetic is a consequence of the tools we develop in order to find all the integral points on a line in the plane. Similarly, Gauss's law of quadratic reciprocity and the theory of continued fractions naturally arise when we attempt to determine the integral points on a curve in the plane given by a quadratic polynomial equation. After an introduction to the theory of diophantine equations, the rest of the book is structured in three acts that correspond to the study of the integral and rational solutions of linear, quadratic, and cubic curves, respectively.

This book describes many applications including modern applications in cryptography; it also presents some recent results in arithmetic geometry. With many exercises, this book can be used as a text for a first course in number theory or for a subsequent course on arithmetic (or diophantine) geometry at the junior-senior level.

This is a textbook for advanced undergraduate students and beginning graduate students in applied mathematics. It presents the basic mathematical foundations of stochastic analysis (probability theory and stochastic processes) as well as some important practical tools and applications (e.g., the connection with differential equations, numerical methods, path integrals, random fields, statistical physics, chemical kinetics, and rare events). The book strikes a nice balance between mathematical formalism and intuitive arguments, a style that is most suited for applied mathematicians. Readers can learn both the rigorous treatment of stochastic analysis as well as practical applications in modeling and simulation. Numerous exercises nicely supplement the main exposition.

Hilbert's tenth problem is one of 23 problems proposed by David Hilbert in 1900 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. These problems gave focus for the exponential development of mathematical thought over the following century. The tenth problem asked for a general algorithm to determine if a given Diophantine equation has a solution in integers. It was finally resolved in a series of papers written by Julia Robinson, Martin Davis, Hilary Putnam, and finally Yuri Matiyasevich in 1970. They showed that no such algorithm exists.

This book is an exposition of this remarkable achievement. Often, the solution to a famous problem involves formidable background. Surprisingly, the solution of Hilbert's tenth problem does not. What is needed is only some elementary number theory and rudimentary logic. In this book, the authors present the complete proof along with the romantic history that goes with it. Along the way, the reader is introduced to Cantor's transfinite numbers, axiomatic set theory, Turing machines, and Gödel's incompleteness theorems.

Copious exercises are included at the end of each chapter to guide the student gently on this ascent. The emphasis throughout is on the modeling process including post-modeling analysis and criticism. It is a textbook on modeling that happens to focus on financial instruments for the management of economic risk. Scattering resonances generalize bound states/eigenvalues for systems in which energy can scatter to infinity. A typical resonance has a rate of oscillation (just as a bound state does) and a rate of decay. Although the notion is intrinsically dynamical, an elegant mathematical formulation comes from considering meromorphic continuations of Green's functions. The poles of these meromorphic continuations capture physical information by identifying the rate of oscillation with the real part of a pole and the rate of decay with its imaginary part. An example from mathematics is given by the zeros of the Riemann zeta function: they are, essentially, the resonances of the Laplacian on the modular surface. The Riemann hypothesis then states that the decay rates for the modular surface are all either \(0\) or \(\frac14\). An example from physics is given by quasi-normal modes of black holes which appear in long-time asymptotics of gravitational waves.

This book concentrates mostly on the simplest case of scattering by compactly supported potentials but provides pointers to modern literature where more general cases are studied. It also presents a recent approach to the study of resonances on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. The last two chapters are devoted to semiclassical methods in the study of resonances.

Lectures on Differential Equations provides a clear and concise presentation of differential equations for undergraduates and beginning graduate students. There is more than enough material here for a year-long course. In fact, the text developed from the author's notes for three courses: the undergraduate introduction to ordinary differential equations, the undergraduate course in Fourier analysis and partial differential equations, and a first graduate course in differential equations. The first four chapters cover the classical syllabus for the undergraduate ODE course leavened by a modern awareness of computing and qualitative methods. The next two chapters contain a well-developed exposition of linear and nonlinear systems with a similarly fresh approach. The final two chapters cover boundary value problems, Fourier analysis, and the elementary theory of PDEs.

The author makes a concerted effort to use plain language and to always start from a simple example or application. The presentation should appeal to, and be readable by, students, especially students in engineering and science. Without being excessively theoretical, the book does address a number of unusual topics: Massera's theorem, Lyapunov's inequality, the isoperimetric inequality, numerical solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems, and more. There are also some new approaches to standard topics including a rethought presentation of series solutions and a nonstandard, but more intuitive, proof of the existence and uniqueness theorem. The collection of problems is especially rich and contains many very challenging exercises.

Philip Korman is professor of mathematics at the University of Cincinnati. He is the author of over one hundred research articles in differential equations and the monograph Global Solution Curves for Semilinear Elliptic Equations. Korman has served on the editorial boards of Communications on Applied Nonlinear Analysis, Electronic Journal of Differential Equations, SIAM Review, and Differential Equations and Applications.

This book provides a compact course in modern cryptography. The mathematical foundations in algebra, number theory and probability are presented with a focus on their cryptographic applications. The text provides rigorous definitions and follows the provable security approach. The most relevant cryptographic schemes are covered, including block ciphers, stream ciphers, hash functions, message authentication codes, public-key encryption, key establishment, digital signatures and elliptic curves. The current developments in post-quantum cryptography are also explored, with separate chapters on quantum computing, lattice-based and code-based cryptosystems.

This book introduces game theory and its applications from an applied mathematician's perspective, systematically developing tools and concepts for game-theoretic modelling in the life and social sciences. Filled with down-to-earth examples of strategic behavior in humans and other animals, the book presents a unified account of the central ideas of both classical and evolutionary game theory. Unlike many books on game theory, which focus on mathematical and recreational aspects of the subject, this book emphasizes using games to answer questions of current scientific interest.

In the present third edition, the author has added substantial new material on evolutionarily stable strategies and their use in behavioral ecology. The only prerequisites are calculus and some exposure to matrix algebra, probability, and differential equations.

Differential Equations: Techniques, Theory, and Applications is designed for a modern first course in differential equations either one or two semesters in length. The organization of the book interweaves the three components in the subtitle, with each building on and supporting the others. Techniques include not just computational methods for producing solutions to differential equations, but also qualitative methods for extracting conceptual information about differential equations and the systems modeled by them. Theory is developed as a means of organizing, understanding, and codifying general principles. Applications show the usefulness of the subject as a whole and heighten interest in both solution techniques and theory. Formal proofs are included in cases where they enhance core understanding; otherwise, they are replaced by informal justifications containing key ideas of a proof in a more conversational format. Applications are drawn from a wide variety of fields: those in physical science and engineering are prominent, of course, but models from biology, medicine, ecology, economics, and sports are also featured.

Foundations and Applications of Statistics simultaneously emphasizes both the foundational and the computational aspects of modern statistics. Engaging and accessible, this book is useful to undergraduate students with a wide range of backgrounds and career goals.

The exposition immediately begins with statistics, presenting concepts and results from probability along the way. Hypothesis testing is introduced very early, and the motivation for several probability distributions comes from p-value computations. Pruim develops the students' practical statistical reasoning through explicit examples and through numerical and graphical summaries of data that allow intuitive inferences before introducing the formal machinery. The topics have been selected to reflect the current practice in statistics, where computation is an indispensible tool. In this vein, the statistical computing environment \(\mathsf{R}\) is used throughout the text and is integral to the exposition. Attention is paid to developing students' mathematical and computational skills as well as their statistical reasoning. Linear models, such as regression and ANOVA, are treated with explicit reference to the underlying linear algebra, which is motivated geometrically.

Foundations and Applications of Statistics discusses both the mathematical theory underlying statistics and practical applications that make it a powerful tool across disciplines. The book contains ample material for a two-semester course in undergraduate probability and statistics. A one-semester course based on the book will cover hypothesis testing and confidence intervals for the most common situations.

In the second edition, the \(\mathsf{R}\) code has been updated throughout to take advantage of new \(\mathsf{R}\) packages and to illustrate better coding style. New sections have been added covering bootstrap methods, multinomial and multivariate normal distributions, the delta method, numerical methods for Bayesian inference, and nonlinear least squares. Also, the use of matrix algebra has been expanded, but remains optional, providing instructors with more options regarding the amount of linear algebra required.

Representation theory investigates the different ways in which a given algebraic object—such as a group or a Lie algebra—can act on a vector space. Besides being a subject of great intrinsic beauty, the theory enjoys the additional benefit of having applications in myriad contexts outside pure mathematics, including quantum field theory and the study of molecules in chemistry.

Adopting a panoramic viewpoint, this book offers an introduction to four different flavors of representation theory: representations of algebras, groups, Lie algebras, and Hopf algebras. Does entropy really increase no matter what we do? Can light pass through a Big Bang? What is certain about the Heisenberg uncertainty principle? Many laws of physics are formulated in terms of differential equations, and the questions above are about the nature of their solutions. This book puts together the three main aspects of the topic of partial differential equations, namely theory, phenomenology, and applications, from a contemporary point of view. In addition to the three principal examples of the wave equation, the heat equation, and Laplace's equation, the book has chapters on dispersion and the Schrödinger equation, nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws, and shock waves.

The book covers material for an introductory course that is aimed at beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate level students. Readers should be conversant with multivariate calculus and linear algebra. They are also expected to have taken an introductory level course in analysis. Each chapter includes a comprehensive set of exercises, and most chapters have additional projects, which are intended to give students opportunities for more in-depth and open-ended study of solutions of partial differential equations and their properties.

Journey into Discrete Mathematics is designed for use in a first course in mathematical abstraction for early-career undergraduate mathematics majors. The important ideas of discrete mathematics are included—logic, sets, proof writing, relations, counting, number theory, and graph theory—in a manner that promotes development of a mathematical mindset and prepares students for further study. While the treatment is designed to prepare the student reader for the mathematics major, the book remains attractive and appealing to students of computer science and other problem-solving disciplines.

The exposition is exquisite and engaging and features detailed descriptions of the thought processes that one might follow to attack the problems of mathematics. The problems are appealing and vary widely in depth and difficulty. Careful design of the book helps the student reader learn to think like a mathematician through the exposition and the problems provided. Several of the core topics, including counting, number theory, and graph theory, are visited twice: once in an introductory manner and then again in a later chapter with more advanced concepts and with a deeper perspective.

This book presents a readable and accessible introductory course in algebraic geometry, with most of the fundamental classical results presented with complete proofs. An emphasis is placed on developing connections between geometric and algebraic aspects of the theory. Differences between the theory in characteristic \(0\) and positive characteristic are emphasized. The basic tools of classical and modern algebraic geometry are introduced, including varieties, schemes, singularities, sheaves, sheaf cohomology, and intersection theory. Basic classical results on curves and surfaces are proved. More advanced topics such as ramification theory, Zariski's main theorem, and Bertini's theorems for general linear systems are presented, with proofs, in the final chapters.

With more than 200 exercises, the book is an excellent resource for teaching and learning introductory algebraic geometry.

Functional analysis is a central subject of mathematics with applications in many areas of geometry, analysis, and physics. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the field for graduate students and researchers.

It begins in Chapter 1 with an introduction to the necessary foundations, including the Arzelà–Ascoli theorem, elementary Hilbert space theory, and the Baire Category Theorem. Chapter 2 develops the three fundamental principles of functional analysis (uniform boundedness, open mapping theorem, Hahn–Banach theorem) and discusses reflexive spaces and the James space. Chapter 3 introduces the weak and weak\(^*\) topologies and includes the theorems of Banach–Alaoglu, Banach–Dieudonné, Eberlein–Šmulyan, Kre&ibreve;n–Milman, as well as an introduction to topological vector spaces and applications to ergodic theory. Chapter 4 is devoted to Fredholm theory. It includes an introduction to the dual operator and to compact operators, and it establishes the closed image theorem. Chapter 5 deals with the spectral theory of bounded linear operators. It introduces complex Banach and Hilbert spaces, the continuous functional calculus for self-adjoint and normal operators, the Gelfand spectrum, spectral measures, cyclic vectors, and the spectral theorem. Chapter 6 introduces unbounded operators and their duals. It establishes the closed image theorem in this setting and extends the functional calculus and spectral measure to unbounded self-adjoint operators on Hilbert spaces. Chapter 7 gives an introduction to strongly continuous semigroups and their infinitesimal generators. It includes foundational results about the dual semigroup and analytic semigroups, an exposition of measurable functions with values in a Banach space, and a discussion of solutions to the inhomogeneous equation and their regularity properties. The appendix establishes the equivalence of the Lemma of Zorn and the Axiom of Choice, and it contains a proof of Tychonoff's theorem.

With 10 to 20 elaborate exercises at the end of each chapter, this book can be used as a text for a one-or-two-semester course on functional analysis for beginning graduate students. Prerequisites are first-year analysis and linear algebra, as well as some foundational material from the second-year courses on point set topology, complex analysis in one variable, and measure and integration.

This book introduces functional analysis to undergraduate mathematics students who possess a basic background in analysis and linear algebra. This is the first truly comprehensive and thorough history of the development of mathematics in the United States and Canada. This first volume of a two-volume work takes the reader from the European encounters with North America in the fifteenth century up to the emergence of the United States as a world leader in mathematics in the 1930s.

In the story of the Colonial period particular emphasis is given to several prominent Colonial figures—Jefferson, Franklin, and Rittenhouse—and four important early colleges—Québec, Harvard, Yale, and William & Mary. During the first three-quarters of the nineteenth century, mathematics in North America was largely the occupation of scattered individual pioneers: Bowditch, Farrar, Adrain, B. Peirce. This period is given a fuller treatment here than previously in the literature, including the creation of the first PhD programs and attempts to form organizations and found journals.

With the founding of Johns Hopkins University in 1876, the American mathematical research community was finally, and firmly, founded. The programs at Hopkins, Chicago, and Clark are detailed as are the influence of major European mathematicians, including especially Klein, Hilbert, and Sylvester. Extensive histories of early areas of American emphasis are provided, including axiomatics, topology, and group theory. Also included are the early histories of statistics and cryptology in America, laying the foundation for the latter topic's role in abstract algebra in the 1950s. The stories of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America are presented in detail.

Combinatorial reciprocity is a very interesting phenomenon, which can be described as follows: A polynomial, whose values at positive integers count combinatorial objects of some sort, may give the number of combinatorial objects of a different sort when evaluated at negative integers (and suitably normalized). Such combinatorial reciprocity theorems occur in connections with graphs, partially ordered sets, polyhedra, and more. Using the combinatorial reciprocity theorems as a leitmotif, this book unfolds central ideas and techniques in enumerative and geometric combinatorics.

Calculus in 3D is an accessible, well-written textbook for an honors course in multivariable calculus for mathematically strong first- or second-year university students. The focus throughout is on two or three dimensions. All of the standard multivariable material is thoroughly covered, including vector calculus treated through both vector fields and differential forms.
