Thi s pape r provide s a brie f overvie w o f this aspect , an d looks a t som e o f th e issue s tha t aris e i n thi s responsibility . 1. Introductio n 1.1. Abou t Institution . KAIST , th e Kore a Advance d Institut e o f Scienc e and Technology, was established in Seoul 1981 as a research institute with a teaching program that consisted only of graduate-level classes. I n 1989, the institution move d to th e nation' s ne w scienc e center , Daedeo k Scienc e Town , locate d i n Daejeon . I t sits amids t numerou s othe r world-clas s researc h institute s o f science , technology , and informatics . Th e busines s magazin e Asiawee k ha s rate d KAIS T severa l time s as Asia's foremos t universit y o f science and technolog y [1] . I n 2004 , The Chronicl e of Higher Educatio n feature d KAIS T a s on e o f the to p thre e universitie s o f Kore a [2]. Th e impac t o f KAIST ha s bee n significan t i n developin g th e huma n resource s that hav e brough t Kore a succes s an d prosperity . Fo r exampl e abou t 10 % o f th e Science an d Engineerin g professor s i n Korea n universitie s an d abou t 20 % o f th e doctor clas s researchers i n Korea n industr y ar e alumn i o f KAIST . KAIST expande d it s progra m t o includ e undergraduat e student s i n 1984 , an d that progra m ha s develope d int o a n increasingl y vita l componen t o f th e univer - sity. Whil e the institution an d it s mathematics departmen t continue s to emphasiz e its cutting-edg e research , it s facult y member s als o striv e fo r effectiv e teachin g i n all areas , includin g servic e courses . KAIS T ha s a facult y o f approximatel y 40 0 professors i n 1 4 departments an d severa l interdisciplinar y program s i n scienc e an d engineering. I t ha s 3,000 undergraduate an d 4,500 graduate students , an d support s many postdoctoral an d research positions filled with both Korean an d internationa l researchers. Althoug h mos t o f KAIST's student s com e fro m Korea , th e numbe r o f international graduat e an d undergraduat e student s i s increasing steadily .
