This monograph is based on the lectures given in July of 1989 at a regional
conference in Auburn University. Usually , ten lectures are presented at such
a conference. I n this case, there were fifteen lectures; ten by Guido Weiss and
five by Bjorn Jawerth. Michae l Frazier collaborated in both the preparation
of the lectures and the writing of these notes.
We give a general description of the material we cover in the introduction.
Here we limit ourselve s t o a few comment s abou t th e organizatio n o f thi s
text. Te n chapters follow th e introduction. The y represent fairl y faithfull y
the material that was covered in the lectures. Thoug h this text contains more
detail than was presented in the conference, w e do not prove all the results
that are announced. O n the other hand, we do give the idea of proof s and
some technical detail s ar e presented in an appendix. Reference s an d some
other historical material are usually found at the end of each chapter under
the headin g "Historica l Note s an d Comments. " I n the las t thre e chapters,
however, we have presented the material in a more historical fashion and we
have included the references in the body of the text.
Finally, we would like to thank the organizers of this conference in Auburn
University. Ou r special thanks go to Jack Brown, Geraldo deSouza, and Gary
Sampson, who created an especially well-organized conference an d made all
the participants feel they were well cared for.
