Preface
The academic year
1991-92
was designated by the Mathematics Department
of Northwestern University as an Emphasis Year in "The connections between
topology and representation theory". Supported by funds from the National Sci-
ence Foundation and Northwestern University, Mathematics Department, visi-
tors from around the world came together during the year to discuss current
developments. During the period May
1-5, 1992,
a conference was held which
attracted over
120
participants. Most of the plenary lectures were expository
in nature, designed to expose current trends to graduate students as well as
nonspecialists familiar with algebraic topology. This volume contains papers
presented or solicited at the conference. All the papers were refereed. The pa-
pers by
J.
Carlson,
.J.
Martino, and T. Petrie are based on their plenary talks.
The paper of M. Hopkins, M. Mahowald, and H. Sadofsky is based on a seminar
given during the emphasis year. The paper by R. Gross and M. Hopkins was
solicited.
We thank Mrs. Melanie Rubin of Northwestern and Mrs. Donna Harmon of the
American Mathematical Society for their expert help in assembling this volume.
