A Conference on Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization took place at the Tech-
nion in Haifa, Israel, on June 18-24, 2008, under the auspices of the Technion Center
for Mathematical Sciences. One of the objectives of the conference was to honor
Alex Ioffe and Simeon Reich, on the occasion of their 70th and 60th birthdays,
respectively. The conference continued the tradition of previous meetings in the
same area that took place at the Technion in the past (“Optimization and Nonlin-
ear Analysis” in 1990 and “Calculus of Variations and Related Topics” in 1998).
Altogether, over 70 participants from 18 countries attended the Conference.
These proceedings, which comprise two volumes, are the tangible record of the
Conference. Most of the papers collected here have been contributed by participants
in the Conference. In some cases, they have chosen to submit manuscripts which
depart from the texts of their lectures. Several invited speakers who were unable to
attend the Conference also contributed papers to these proceedings. All submissions
have been carefully refereed. The papers in this first volume are mainly devoted
to Nonlinear Analysis while the papers in the second one are mainly devoted to
We acknowledge with thanks the support provided for the Conference by the
