This volume contains the proceedings of a May 1993 conference at Bar-Ilan University held in honor of Professor Friedrich Hirzebruch on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Hirzebruch was for many years the director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany. The conference was sponsored by the Emmy Noether Research Institute for Mathematics, which was jointly founded in 1992 by Bar-Ilan University and the Minerva Foundation of Germany.
Attended by 60 participants from Israel and abroad, the conference focused on four topics: topology of algebraic varieties, classification of surfaces, vector bundles, and 3-folds. The opening article by Michael Atiyah gives a short description of the contributions of Friedrich Hirzebruch to mathematics.
