Background for crafters:
Two basic square quilt blocks involving quarter circles in the
corners of the squares are used in various quilting patterns. Perhaps
the more common is the square with a quarter circle in a contrasting
color in one corner, commonly called a Drunkard's Path quilt
block. This chapter focuses on the other pattern for a single
square. It involves two quarter-circle strips in opposing corners that
connect adjacent sides. Using a method involving simply laying out the
quilt blocks and then rotating some of them, we solve the mystery of
creating a quilt with a single path through the interior squares of
a quilt. The folklore states that the method to create such a quilt is
a secret passed from quiltmaker to quiltmaker; that secret is revealed
in this chapter.
About Figuring Fibers:
Pick up this book and dive into one of eight chapters relating
mathematics to fiber arts! Amazing exposition transports any
interested person on a mathematical exploration that is rigorous
enough to capture the hearts of mathematicians. The zenith of
creativity is achieved as readers are led to knit, crochet, quilt, or
sew a project specifically designed to illuminate the mathematics
through its physical realization. The beautiful finished pieces
provide a visual understanding of the mathematics that can be shared
with those who view them. If you love mathematics or fiber arts, this
book is for you!
