SELBERG TRACE FORMULA 11
Acknowledgements I. Efrat and P. Sarnak pointed out to us several years
ago that Zagier [Za.l] had already developed a well-known trace formula for
Tr E(-,s)R , at least if T = SL2(ff). Zagier's method was clearer and more
efficient than our former "truncation" method, and we have therefore adopted
it in §3. Ve also use Zagier's renormalization method [Za.2] at various
points here and in [Z.5]. Sarnak's proof of the prime geodesic theorem
([Sa.l]), which avoids the use of the Selberg zeta function, was also
indispensible.
