Part 1 of this book is a crash course in the theory of topological groups, together
with a number of examples that will be needed in the sequel. Chapter 1 describes
the basic structure of topological groups, and Chapter 3 presents the basic facts
for analysis on those groups. The sophisticated reader with some knowledge of
topological group theory may wish to confine his attention to the examples in
Chapter 2 and in Section 3.1, especially those of Section 2.10.
